Fabrics Needed

  • 6 1/2 yard pieces of 3 assorted flannel prints
  • 1 5/8 yards of fabric for inner border
  • 1 7/8 yard of fabric for outer border and binding
  • 3 1/4 yards of backing fabric
  • 58 x 66″ of quilt batting

Cut Your Fabrics

Cut your fabric in the following order. The border and binding strips are cut the length of the fabric (parallel to the selvage)

From your 6 1/2 yards of fabric cut

  • 20-4 1/2 Squares from each of the 3 fabrics

From your Inner border fabric cut:

  • 2- 1 1/2 x 50 1/2″ inner border strips
  • 2- 1/2 x 40 1/2″ inner border strips

From your Outer border and binding strips cut:

  • 4- 2 1/2 x 63″ binding strips
  • 2 -5 1/2 x 60 1/2 ” outer border strips
  • 2- 5 1/2 x 42 1/2″ outer border strips

Assemble Your Quilt

Referring to the photo above, lay out the 120 squares in 12 horizontal rows. Sew together the squares in each of your flannel throw quilt rows.

After completing each row, press the seam allowance in one direction, alternating the direction with each row.

Join the rows to complete the quilt center. Press the seam allowances in 1 direction. Your quilt before borders and binding should measure 40 1/2″ x 48 1/2″

Add The Inner Borders

Sew your inner border strips to the top and bottom edges of the flannel throw quilt (1 1/2 x 40 1/2″ pieces)

Add the 1 1/2 x 50 1/2″ inner borer strips to the side edges of your flannel throw quilt. Press the seam allowances toward the inner border

Finish Your Flannel Throw Quilt

Layer the quilt top, batting and backing. Quilt as desired either on your sewing machine, hand quilting or long arm.

Add your binding and now you are finished. You can use a cotton fabric if you don’t want to use a flannel fabric.
