Materials Needed for Layer Cake baby Quilt Block

I used this cute layer cake bundle from The Fabric Store and a solid fabric, which could easily be scrap fabric from your stash. The measurements are for 1 block, but I do have other size quilts below.

First cut your triangles. You need 4 squares that are 3 1/2 ” x 3 1/2″ cut diagonally in 2. You can either keep the scraps for another project or if you are making a quilt from your layer cake baby quilt block, put them aside to use in another block.

You need 2 middle blocks that once sewn will be 3 x 4″ so cut them 4 1/2″ x 3 1/2″.

Your middle piece when sewn will measure 4″x10″. Go ahead and cut it 4 1/2″ x 10″. Because layer cake squares are only 10″ if you make a quilt out of it, the squares will be a little less than 10″ but it’s fine in the end.

Instructions for sewing:

Start with your triangles and sew them together, making a square using a 1/4″ seam allowance. Press your seams toward your darker colors.

Sew your triangle squares to the smaller rectangle. You should have 2 connected pieces. Don’t forget to press your seams in the same direction.

Now finish your layer cake baby quilt block by sewing it to your middle piece. Don’t forget to press your seams all flat.
